How Clean is Your Cleanroom?

Maintaining a clean and healthy environment for your commercial business is a given, but when it comes to cleanrooms or controlled environments, the stakes are suddenly much higher and cleanliness is an absolute requirement. Compared to an office space, or even a manufacturing and production facility, controlled environments require specialized cleaning and an attention to detail to air quality that not all cleaning companies can offer. Luckily, here at New England Cleaning Services, Inc., we have 40 years of experience under our belts for even high classifications of cleanrooms!

Cleanroom 101

A cleanroom is a specialized room that is highly regulated for temperature, pressure, and air quality in order to control how much particulate contamination is present in the air. Cleanrooms are used in a wide variety of industries, from biotech, pharmaceutical, to medical in order to control for any variables that may affect the quality of products and procedures. All personnel is required to wear some type of personal protective equipment to minimize contamination from the body and go through extensive training to ensure no particles enter or leave the area.

Are they all the same?

There is a wide variation in the standards for cleanliness of cleanrooms, which is reflected in classification systems that rank rooms according to the number and size of particles permitted in a volume of air. While a Class 10 allows up to 10 maximum particles larger than 0.5mm per cubic foot of air, a Class 100,000 allows up to 100,000 maximum particles, which can affect the standards for cleanliness and personal protective equipment for the cleanroom.

How are they kept clean?

The protocols for cleaning is highly dependent on the cleanroom classification, but in general, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are present to trap any larger particles that could negatively impact the happenings inside the cleanroom. Contamination can derive from personnel (hair, perfumes, clothing), the facility itself (walls, vents, debris), or from tools, supplies, or products used inside the room. Therefore, cleaning must ensure that all surface areas, floors, door handles, knobs, frames, mats, and walls are free of debris, followed by  disinfecting.
